报告题目：The Role of Statistics in the Big Data and AI Era

报告摘要：With modern technology, it becomes easier and easier to collect data (BIG DATA). Data are not just numbers, but numbers that carry information about a specific setting; need to be interpreted and help us to make decisions (AI).  Statisticians are experts in: (i) producing useful data; (ii) analyzing data to make meanful results; and (iii) drawing practical conclusions. In the BIG DATA and AI era, statisticians are face many new challenges. In this presentation, I will talk about: (1) some new challenges; (2) the importance of statistics in analysising BIG DATA; (3) the role of statisticians in the new Big Data and AI era.  Several examples are used to illustrate the role of statistics in the BIG DATA and AI era.

报告人简介：胡飞芳，美国乔治华盛顿大学统计系教授, 中国 “国家计划”教授，中国人民大学 统计与大数据研究院教授。1994年被授予加拿大英属哥伦比亚大学（University of British Columbia）统计学博士学位，并获得加拿大优秀博士论文奖。2004年美国自然科学基金会杰出青年基金的得主。 2009年当选为美国统计协会(American Statistical Association)和国际数理统计协会(Institute of Mathematical Statistics)双料Fellow，是美国统计协会杂志 (Journal of American Statistical Association) 和统计年鉴（Annals of Statistics）等国际顶尖统计杂志的副主编。主持五项美国国家自然科学基金研究项目， 一项中国自然科学基金研究项目，以及多项香港新加坡研究项目。
